As the wind was forecast to be W going NW it had to be Hayling or better
still Hill Head. Not my favourite drive but it's the end that counts. When
I stopped to fill up it was already obviously windy but on arrival at Monks
whatsit car park the wind was over 20 knots. I went for the 4.7 and it
turned out to be fine.
It's a long time since I sailed in dead onshore winds but once I got away
from the beach it was a nice change to be riding along the waves. At mid
tide the chop/waves seemed to build. Later, at high water it smoothed out.
I was quite surprised but the 4.7 was fine. Most people seemed to be on
5.7s though some of these were downhauled to oblivion. I had a relative
modest amount of down and out haul.
Finally packed up when the wind dropped at 5.30 - 6.00. By the time I'd
finished packing the wind swung round to the NW as forecast and definitely
picked up again. Not as much as earlier but once again people were up and
planing and more cars were arriving in the car park.
Load of wind, loads of people out, a change of venue. It's gotta be another
4.
Oh yes, on the way home I stopped to check out the beach at Titchfield
Haven. Some old geezer came along and engaged me in the usual "nice day"
stuff. "It'll be good when we get rid of this wind," he sail. I pointed to
the board on the roof of my car a few yards away.
